Sappho’s Rock

Within the hour the sun would set behind the rocks
Behind Sappho’s head,
Where she stares from her bed of rippling sea
Mouth open in a gasp of eternal ecstasy
She never moves.
Her rugged face, broad shoulders, jagged, lined coarse beauty a constant presence
Witnessing, sheltering the events of time without judgement.
There’s no Judgement.

In the seventies the Mohican banshees worshipped, climbed and
Claimed her as their own.
Wild naked punk girls wearing only knives and hair.
Fire in their eyes, bellies and loins
Youthful aggression, anarchic anger.
Wild, wild women tasting of salt and sun
All breast, bronze and sexual tension,
Initiation and fucking in the sand.
Drums and didges, dancing round the fire at night
Skinny dipping, swimming the path of moonlight
Those Amazon activists ruled for their time
But too loud, too loud, too long
Too bold too brazen and way too scary!!
For the local men they’d rejected returned, they huffed and they puffed and they burned their camp down.

Now Forty years on, it’s wind surfs, sailboats and canoes.
Tourists they are playing in the sheltered cove of Sappho’s elbow.
Patricia picks up cigarette butts from the hot dry sand
Patricia In front of her World Spirit caravan
Where musicians of the world they come and Jamm, come and jamm
In their own free way,
Well, that’s what the signs say!

Patricia cooks and serves all night and day
Omelettes, salads, crepes, fresh juice
Mythos, frappes and her mystical mojitos.
Wooden benches , yellow canvas chairs,
Flags of Africa, South America under the palm tree roof
Rebuilt each year by Thanasi.
A gentle Athenian artist he had a look of Che Guevara,
wearing self inflicted Navy tattoos,
‘make love not war, LSD
He had an ability to create wondrous 3D worlds with his hands
Moulding metal into Sculpture and precious jewels.
Gigantic shells of spiralling silver live in the garden of the house they build.
Year after year they build this house, this work of love, art, sweat and beauty.
One day they will live there, but money is tight, tight, tight.
Thanasi still smoking too much spin me some cool sounds, some me some
Jazz, Funk, Reggae and Dub, come on Thanasi spin me some dub!

Patricia swallowed the languages of the world young
Patricia gifted of ear and of tongue, without Patricia there is nothing at all.
How we love Patricia.

Patricia hands me a disc of heavy raw silver a gift from Thanasi
Carved on the disc is the head of Sappho rugged and course
Just like the rock her Jagged lined course beauty a constant presence,
Witnessing, sheltering the events of time without judgement
Mouth always open in a gasp of eternal ecstasy and she never moves.
